Coming from Porto Venere, Vernazza it is the third landing place and the fourth of the Cinque Terre.
Considering its shape and its location, mooring in Vernazza can be difficult in heavy sea conditions and strong winds.
It extends along a rocky ridge with an imposing castle at the top in the center of which stands a cylindrical stone tower. The area can be visited and is used for exhibitions and events. Vernazza is a treasure guarded by stone. For those arriving from the sea, from the east, the hamlet is mostly hidden, guarded by a rock canopy. Then, upon landing, one is struck by the richness of the colors: the facades of the typical Ligurian houses, red, ochre, orange, face the splendid bay and reach down to the blue-green of the sea. Vernazza is a maze of stairs and terraces, ideal for a romantic lunch or dinner.
Due to its unique shape, between the Middle Ages and the modern age, it was the only hamlet in the Cinque Terre where galleys and boats of moderate size could dock.
It seems that the British Museum in London holds a bronze cannon that the English allegedly stole from Castello Doria, the fortress of Vernazza.
The inhabitants of Vernazza, its fishermen, were and still are famous for a dish based on anchovies, called the "tian".
In Vernazza it is possible to spend some time on the beach. There are two. One is located in the immediate vicinity of the landing place and near the church of Saint Margaret and is sheltered from the waves thanks to the rock barrier that protects the small port - the space on the beach is very limited but this makes it very easy to access the sea and it is always possible to spread your towel out on the rocks. The second, on the other hand, can be reached from the central Via Roma by going through a cave of undisputed charm even if, considering how exposed it is to the fury of the sea, it is not always reachable and what emerges from the waves are aggregates of gravel and stones. For security reasons, there is no guarantee that it will always be accessible.
From Vernazza, it is possible to reach the other hamlets of the Cinque Terre via our carriers, but also Levanto, Deiva and Moneglia, as well as Porto Venere, the only place among these that does not have any railway service.
