You reach Tellaro after skirting cliffs and marvelous inlets, such as the Caletta; it is accessible only to small boats that allow mooring amidst outcroppings of rocks. Heavy sea and strong winds can make it difficult to get on and off boats. The picturesque hamlet has a natural inlet where it is possible to land, where the emerald green water allows you to observe a rocky seabed dotted with sea urchins. The landing takes place on a stone platform which, after a few steps, allows access to the hamlet and is located in the immediate vicinity of the charming church of Saint George.
The symbol of Tellaro is the octopus. In 1660, as evidenced by a plaque in Latin placed outside the Church of Saint George, a large octopus warned the inhabitants of the hamlet of an imminent attack by pirates; the inhabitants were thus able to push the assailants back into the sea. Legend has it that the octopus made the church bells ring by pulling the bell’s ropes with its tentacles.
Every year the hamlet of Tellaro participates in the traditional "rowing challenge", the Palio of the Gulf which 13 hamlets take part in.
Reaching Tellaro from La Spezia, Porto Venere, San Terenzo and Lerici is quick and pleasant. You can enjoy the sea breezes, the sun, and the panorama. It is ideal for tourists and local inhabitants from La Spezia who want to spend a day on the beach or take a trip there, without the stress of finding a place to park the car or paying for parking within the blue lines marked on the pavement. No intermediate stops and the cost, for residents of the province, is comparable to that of the bus.
From the Cinque Terre and the hamlets of the Costa dei Pirati (Cadimare, Fezzano and Le Grazie) Tellaro can be easily reached with a single stopover in Porto Venere.
In addition to visiting the splendid village, which extends along a rocky crest, or walking to secluded seaside resorts such as Fiascherino or the famous "Eco del Mare" bay, hikers can begin an ascent that will lead them to Monte Marcello following the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) trails until they reach the Alta Via del Golfo going through holm oak woods and Mediterranean scrub. Tellaro has numerous restaurants and some cafés that make for pleasant moments of rest overlooking the sea.
