Le Grazie is a picturesque hamlet, easily reachable from La Spezia via the boats of the Consortium; it takes its name from the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie (Our Lady of Grace) which is clearly visible from the sea when approaching the coast. The landing wharf is large and accessible to all; it is located in the heart of the marina. Sea and strong offshore winds can make it difficult to get on and off the boats.
Le Grazie participates every year in the traditional "rowing challenge", the Palio of the Gulf which 13 villages take part in.
An ancient Roman villa can be visited in the Varignano district of Le Grazie; the archaeological site allows you to go back in time, all the way to 90-80 BC. Today as then in these places, the landscape was full of olive trees, cultivated in abundance by the ancients to obtain oil.
Also in Le Grazie, there is the Bastione del Varignano which, in special circumstances, can be visited by the public. This complex of buildings was a leper hospital in the past, therefore a kind of prison, and, during the last century, it was the headquarters of the "Teseo Tesei" Navy Divers and Raiders Group.
Le Grazie is home to the Valdettaro Shipyard, founded way back in 1917 and famous for its shipwrights, for the production and restoration of boats that belonged to numerous historical figures of the twentieth century, such as Eisenhower's Williamsburg and Marshal Tito’s Istranka.
The famous poet Giovanni Giudici was born in Le Grazie in 1924.
For those who want to spend a few hours on the beach in the Gulf, Le Grazie offers the possibility of accessing some public beaches - the sand, the fact that the bay is particularly sheltered and hardly ever subject to significant wave motion make these beaches particularly suitable for children. Le Grazie is both a destination and departure point, so it is possible to visit it and then proceed on to other beaches or, for those staying in the hamlet, it is possible - by boat - to reach other places such as San Terenzo, Lerici, Tellaro, Porto Venere and the Cinque Terre.
